“The biggest K-pop band to top the charts isn’t even real.” – Wall Street Journal, July 20, 2025
In an unexpected twist, Netflix’s animated film K-POP Demon Hunters has soared to the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s Global Chart, achieving a milestone that even BTS and BLACKPINK haven’t reached.
🎤 The Rise of a Virtual K-Pop Sensation
According to the Wall Street Journal, the film’s fictional boy group “Lion Boyz” and girl group “Huntrix” have captivated global audiences. One of the standout performances comes from Kevin Woo (Korean name: 우성현), a former member of U-KISS, who provides the voice for “Mystery.”
Just a few months ago, Kevin had around 10,000 monthly Spotify listeners. Since the release of K-POP Demon Hunters, that number has skyrocketed to over 20 million.
📈 Outperforming Real-World K-Pop Giants
Two songs from the film have become the most-streamed tracks on U.S. Spotify, surpassing even BTS and BLACKPINK—something no real K-pop group has accomplished to date.
The WSJ noted, “A fictional K-pop band has gained popularity faster than any real group.”
🤖 The Ideal K-Pop Group? One That Never Sleeps or Ages
Professor Seokyoung Kim of UCLA, a K-pop researcher, explained:
“K-POP Demon Hunters represents the ultimate dream of K-pop companies—idols who don’t sleep, don’t get sick, and stay forever young.”
He emphasized that the film’s success shows fans are capable of forming emotional connections with virtual idols, predicting this could lead to many copycats in the future.
🧠 Can AI Replace Human Artists?
Not everyone is convinced. Benny Cha, a K-pop producer and composer who has worked with AI musicians, shared:
“You don’t need to eliminate humans. Real artists bring emotional depth, chemistry, and unpredictability—things AI simply can’t replicate.”
👨👧 When Fiction Sparks Real Emotion
The WSJ also highlighted the story of Vasileios Tsagkaropoulos, a 45-year-old father of two. He had never listened to K-pop until he watched K-POP Demon Hunters with his daughters. Moved to tears by the ending, he has since watched it twice more, listens to the soundtrack in his car, and even bought Huntrix merchandise.
“I used to think K-pop was just flashy marketing,” he said. “Now, it’s a meaningful memory I share with my daughters.”
