🗓️ What Was the 2+2 Trade Meeting About?
The Korea–US “2+2” trade meeting was scheduled to take place on July 25, 2025, in Washington D.C.
This high-level meeting was expected to bring together top officials from both countries’ finance and trade ministries to address pressing bilateral trade issues.
From Korea:
- Deputy Prime Minister Koo Yoon-cheol (Minister of Economy and Finance)
- Yeo Han-koo, Chief Trade Negotiator at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE)
From the U.S.:
- Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo (noted in the original article as “베센트”)
- Jamison Greer, representative from the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office (USTR)

❌ Why the Korea–US Talks Were Cancelled
On the morning of July 24, South Korea’s Ministry of Economy and Finance issued a statement confirming that the 2+2 trade talks were cancelled due to an “urgent scheduling issue” involving the U.S. Treasury Secretary.
“The meeting could not proceed due to an emergency on the U.S. side,” the Korean ministry explained.
Despite the abrupt cancellation, the U.S. reportedly suggested rescheduling the talks as soon as possible, and both sides agreed to coordinate a new date quickly.
✈️ What Happens to the Korean Delegation Now?
Deputy Prime Minister Koo Yoon-cheol had already arrived at Incheon International Airport when he was informed of the cancellation. His departure has been postponed.
Meanwhile:
- Trade Minister Kim Jung-kwan, who left for the U.S. a day earlier,
- and Chief Negotiator Yeo Han-koo, who is already in the U.S.,
will continue planned consultations with their American counterparts.
🔎 What’s Next for Bilateral Trade Strategy?
Though the 2+2 format meeting has been delayed, the Korean government emphasized that key discussions on bilateral trade cooperation will continue as scheduled through separate working-level channels.
This marks the second major Korea–US economic meeting delayed in 2025, raising concerns about coordination gaps at a time when both countries face rising global trade pressures.
